CARDIFF CITY STADIUM - 26,500 SEAT FOOTBALL STADIUM

Suraj Vithlani acted as project architect at Arup Sport. The project was executed by Laing O'Rourke.

Arup Sport were novated under the D&B contract between contractor Laing O’Rourke and client CCFC. Arup Sport's remit was to assist LOR in achieving discharge of planning conditions, and constructing a licensable football stadium in accordance with Arup Sport’s original design intent.

A key feature of the scheme is a perimeter colonnade concourse set within the undercroft of the stadium footprint. This provides weather protection as well as softening the edge condition and reduces any apparent bulk to the building. A variegated semi-translucent façade glows below a low-key roof-plane. The façade composition generates rhythm round the stadium using a combination of composite cladding panels and translucent GRP panels in varying club colours.

The stadium was completed within budget and on schedule for the 2009 football league season.
